Bus ride: definitely not a joy ride.


Challenges of driving on a single lane ‘highway’.

I had gone to some rural villages of Lalitpur last week to see and experience the life there. All these villages are outside of Kathmandu valley though many people may think that the entire Lalitpur district lies inside the Valley. My colleague at Kantipur, Krishna Gyawali who covers Lalitpur for the newspaper, accompanied me. The trip started from Lagankhel where we took a bus to Chapagaun, the largest village of Lalitpur. At Chapagaun we bought tickets up to Chhapele, Bhattedanda. The first bus had already left by the time we reached there (8:30 am). This one was supposed to leave at 9 am but, as it happens with most things in Nepal, the bus finally left Chapagaun at 10:30. त्यो साँझ उनका घरमा सातजना माओवादी आए । तिनलाई खाना पकाइदिनुपर्ने भो । बेंसीको खेतमा काम सकेर घरतिर उक्लिँदै थिए उनी । ‘घर नजिकै अलि तल तिनै माओवादीले कट्याक कट्याक गर्दै बन्दुक तेस्र्याए मतिर,’ उनले सम्झिए, ‘हेर्नुस् है । मेरै घरमा जाँदैछु, मैलाई बन्दुक तेस्र्याउँछन् । एउटीले भनिन्, ‘ओहो बुवा, हामीले झन्डै ठोकेर सिध्याको ।’ त्यो बन्दुक तेर्स्याकै कारण त्यो साँझ माओवादीले ‘नमीठो’ स्वाद चाखे ।

त्यो कसरी अलि पछि लेखौंला, अहिलेलाई ४७ वर्षे सुरेन्द्रबहादुर सञ्जेलको परिचय । हालैको एक साँझ अबेर बास नपाएपछि छटपटिएका दुई संवाददाताहरूलाई एक रात सुताउन र एक छाक खुवाउन सहजै तयार भएका सञ्जेलले ललितपुरको दुर्गम अश्राङ गाविसस्थित वागमती किनार नजिकै बन्दै गरेको आफ्नो (बेंसीको) घर अगाडि ढलेको खयरको रूखमा बसेर पुराना दिन सम्झिएका थिए । Continue reading →

एप्पल vs गुगल [एउटा छलफल]

आखिर एप्पलले गुगललाई पछारेरै छाड्यो । ठुला कम्पनीहरुको विश्वव्यापी ख्याती (ब्रान्डको पहिचान) मापन गर्ने एउटा संस्था मिलवार्ड ब्राउनले यसै साता सार्वजनिक गरेको एक सर्वे अनुसार इन्टरनेट सर्च इन्जिन गुगललाई पछार्दै कम्प्युटर र आइफोन निर्माता एप्पल नम्बर एक स्थानमा पुगेको छ । वितेका चार बर्षयता त्यो राजकीय स्थानमा गुगल थियो । ब्राउनका अनुसार एप्पलको ब्रान्ड (नाम) को मूल्य एक खर्व ५३ अर्ब डलर (१० हजार सात सय १० अर्ब नेपाली रुपैया) छ । यो मूल्य गत बर्षको भन्दा ८४ प्रतिशत बढी हो । अर्कोतिर, पोहोरको भन्दा र्दुइ प्रतिशत घटेर गुगलको ब्रान्ड मूल्य एक खर्ब ११ अर्ब डलर पुगेको छ । Continue reading →

Pre-monsoon downpour & hailstorm in Gwarko area of Kathmandu

P.S.: I am a Janti today, attending friends’ wedding. The sudden downpour briefly stopped the Janti procession- to those who were on bikes. The rain was so heavy that road was waterlogged in minutes. Now it’s a sunny day again.
