School

Dinesh Wagle studied in three schools- Tripureshwor in Ramechhap, Dorji in Kathmandu, and Janapremi in Bhaktapur. And in two colleges in Kathmandu. He stayed in two separate hostels during some years in schools.

One Student, Three Schools

Dinesh started his academic life at the age of 5 from the playground of Tripureshwor Secondary School (TSS) in Ramechhap that didn’t had enough desks for students. He enjoyed his days in this public school. He still has some good friends from those days. He left TSS in 1990 to join Dorji High School, a Tibetan institute, in Boudha, Kathmandu as a residential student on 4th grade. After spending a couple of cold winters and hot summers eating tea momo, the default breakfast in the hostel (he says he still remembers the taste), and trying to learn Tibetan (which he couldn’t) Dinesh left Dorji for Adarsha Janapremi English Secondary School (AJESS), in Kaushaltar, Bhaktpur. He began his education as an 8th grader in this school.

Dinesh never attended 7th grade, and sometime he regrets for not doing so. He regretted the most during his days of grade 9th when he struggled get pass marks in examination. Mathematics were particularly torturous. He still hates this subject. In AJESS, Dinesh was a day-scholar except in the last year when he stayed in the school’s hostel. The school wasn’t very far from where he lived then.

In the College

After graduating School Leaving Certificate (SLC) from AJESS, Dinesh started his college life as a Proficiency Certificate Level (PCL) student, with Journalism, English & Psychology as majors, in R R College, Kathmandu. He did bachelors in Journalism and English.

Dinesh made quite a few good friends in R R, especially in its Journalism and Mass Communication Department. Some of them are working with some Kathmandu newspapers. Among them, Tilak Pathak works at Nagarik daily. Tilak and Dinesh once worked together in Nepal magazine.  Some others include Bhuvan KC, Prakash Giri, Sribhakta Khanal, Toya Dahal. Except for Khanal all of them are active in the media industry.

The Unfinished Business

In the end of 2001, Dinesh went to Kathmandu Don Bosco College (KDBC), in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu, to study Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA). He was unable to give sufficient time for the course, which demanded most of his job time too, because at one point the situation was that it was almost impossible for him to do both- study and job- at the same time. He couldn’t kick the job away to continue his study as he was addicted to the job he was doing. Moreover the job earned him money without which he was unable to pay his tuition fee. So he bid goodbye to KDBC before completing his second semester. Not a good decision but had to be taken considering all other options!

A bit of advice please … I have a 19 year old Nepalese girl living with me in the UK. She has to go back to KTM in May and I would like to support her in carrying on her education. She would like to study computers.

A residential college would be a preferred option. Can you give me some pointers on how to start my research? My intial search has brought up a huge list of schools/colleges etc but I have no idea how to seive out the good from the bad.

    Thank you in anticipation

    Dear Dinesh,

I read with interest your webpage. I need your advice and help. I work as an office boy in Doha, Qatar. I have been out of Nepal for the last two years. The unfortunate thing is that I could not complete my schooling while in my home town of Khotang. The urge to study and finish school SLC is more compelling now. You see, I work amongst the educated lot now. I am posted in a scientific research office of Qatar University. Could, you please guide me, as to how, I can finish my School education while being away from Nepal? Once, I obtain, my SLC, I look forwards to studing futher with some open education institution from Nepal.

    Hope to hear from you,

    Namaskar,

    Kishor.
