  • Wakefulness (via WSJ)

I am re-blogging it- posted almost a year ago- because there are some striking similarities between two things that have been mentioned in the post and my actual state today. Haven’t been able to sleep till now (3 am) and, yes, changed the theme of the site to Twenty Eleven and that banner pic of me inside a Thai train which is heading to the border with Cambodia. The only difference will be that I’ll have to wake up EARLY tomorrow today as I have some imp works/appointments.

I couldn’t sleep a wink last night Because we had that silly fight. LOL. There was no fight but a night passed by without me sleeping a wink. First time in many years. … Read More

Spending some of my last hours in Phnom Penh. Small city and relatively quiet. Traffic is slightly haphazard than what is in Kathmandu. Liked the city. Loved the part called Sisowath Quay aka Riverside: “an attractive boulevard running along the banks of the Mekong and Tonle Sap. It’s fronted by a large, long open space with manicured lawns, palm trees and open pathways, all recently re-done as part of a Japanese funded project to upgrade the flood infrastructure along the river.” That description is taken from a Wikitravels page on Phnom Penh.

Came here two days ago from Siem Reap- the town that houses famed Angkor Wat or the temple. [Wat in Khmer means pagoda, my friend tells me.] But Angkor Wat is hardly a pagoda. It was a temple- Vishnu mandir by a Angkor king. One of his descendants ‘modified’ it to be a Buddhist temple. For a Nepali visitor like me, the temple stood as a symbol of religious harmony and close integration of Hinduism and Buddhism. But the reality may be complex: one religious belief trying to overthrow other etc. That’s just a hint. Details will be posted as I post more pics later.

May be its time to visit some beaches in Thailand.

  • Bangkok

    Woman at work.

Today is the 7th and second last day in Bangkok, Thailand. I’ll cross over to a neighboring country tomorrow. [The name the place literally means “Siam Defeated” according to Wikitravels.]

I am not posting here photos of high-rise buildings and glitchy malls of Bangkok in this entry. Will do that, may be, in next posts about the city. Lady collectors in the buses- beautifully dressed and some with their faces covered by masks- were new to me. (I liked traveling in airconditioned buses in Bangkok.) By today, I have traveled in buses, both trains (sky and underground) and over the Chao Phraya River in boat. Enjoyed that boat ride. But no tuk tuk yet. May be their turn will come when I return to the city again in a week. (More later.) (धेरै…)

  • Manila

Today’s the last and 21st day in Manila. I am at the airport to fly to an Asian capital where I plan to spend a few days before moving to another one.

There was no time for me to publish any updates- words or pictures on this site- during my stay in manila except for a couple of Google Plus posts:

    July 13
Have been living some of the most challenging days 🙂 Finally, go to bed at 12:30 in the night. Wake up at SIX am, flip on the computer to GO THROUGH READINGS but not to G+! By EIGHT, in the classroom. Listen to lectures, Participate in the discourse, do the power point presentations on given topics, write papers (watch movies and analyze them too!) 5:30 PM. Tired? Hell I am. But the day is not over. What are the assignments? Which group I am in? THREE more assignments for tomorrow- must complete by tonight. Okay, I am in two groups, gotta do a presentation AND participate in a debate on ethics and what not. THEN a bundle of printed materials remains to be read AND saturated into a 700 word paper. STUDENT LIFE.

[After reading this update one may understand why there are no more updates after July 13! Too many assignments and the free time had to be utilized by exploring Manila as well as nearby beaches!]

July 10 The Indonesian guy I am sharing the room with is snoring like he will not get time in future. The Cambodian classmate, meanwhile, is having a sound sleep. It’s 12:43 in the night in Manila and I just got out of the room to get some ‘peace’ and wifi in the lobby. Need to finish reading this Aristotle thing before I go to sleep. From the book: “Virtue, then, is of two kinds, intellectual and moral…The pleasure or pain that actions cause the agent may serve as an index of moral progress, since good conduct consists in a proper attitude towards pleasure and pain.” Guess what, I am a journalism student 🙂

July 9 Had a long discussion w/ my Chinese classmate here in Manila. This reminded me of similar moments w/ Xu Jie http://bit.ly/mXrQCq

    July 8
For the record: Today it rained heavily in Manila- the kind of rain that we have been experiencing in Kathmandu in recent past.
