Sharada Sharma, the writer and wife of politician Narahari Acharya, had invited us (Suraj and I) at a small gathering of writers and literary figures in their home on Sunday 11, May. यो गृष्मयाममा मानिसहरूजत्तिकै अरू कोही व्यस्त छन् भने ती हुन्, तिनका चप्पल । फ्लिप-फ्लप, फ्लिप-फ्लप, फ्लिप-फ्लप । हालैको चुनावमा माओवादीको विजय भएपछि नेपाली राजनीति जति ‘लाल’ भा’छ, गर्मी चढ्दै जाँदा नेपाली खुट्टाहरू त्योभन्दा बढी ‘चप्पलमय’ भा’छन् । चुनावी नतिजाले देशमा दिगो शान्ति र गणतन्त्र संस्थागत गर्ने अपेक्षा छ जो, आशा गरौं, आउने सयौं वर्षम्म कायमै रहनेछन् । तर चप्पलहरूको यो राज छोटो हो, जाडो आओस्, फेरि जुत्ताहरूको राजआउँछ ।

Who, what, when: I, Dinesh Wagle, bought a pair of sandals today.
Where: Kathmandu Mall, New Road (Kathmandu).
Why: “That’s a very strange question to ask.”
How: Personally, went to the mall, sneaked into a few shops and found the one that I thought were good for me, bargained for at least a minute and paid the amount, didn’t take off the sandals that I had already wore and walked away from the shop.

How often do you ask for a lift on the road? I rarely do that in Kathmandu where different forms of public transportation could be found almost everywhere in the city. What about when there is a Nepal Banda (general strike) or ban on vehicles but one brave or a privileged rider is about to pass away by your side? Give him/her a hand? Why not? That’s what I did on the Election Day (10 April) and I was able to go around the city of Kathmandu and Lalitpur in a few hours. (धेरै…)

The district of Gorkha, in my mind, was always a very remote place. That was before I went there last month (in the first week of March). I couldn’t go outside the district headquarter and trek in the villages. I found the district headquarters nice and beautiful. I had to trek for about half an hour- climbing all those stairs- to reach the fabled Gorkha palace and the Gorakhnath temple. That is where I took the photo displayed above. Camera isn’t allowed in the temple and palace premise so I did the self-portrait just below the the main entrance gate. (धेरै…)

Background: I had this idea of a story about the rising inflation, worldwide and in Nepal. I wanted the real story, human story not just the hard facts. Though I am not an a-dollar-day man (fortunately I earn slightly more than that) I can still feel the heat of inflation in various forms. The price these days have skyrocketed. From a cup of tea to a plate of momo to a t-shirt to apartment rooms to bus fares to plane tickets. So I wanted to do a story about inflation for Koseli but unfortunately I couldn’t. There were too many other news assignments for the regular issue of Kantipur. Too many foreign observers were coming in to see the CA polls and I had to follow them. I had to cover too many press conferences and other stuffs. (धेरै…)
Super Tired. Nearly Depleted. Almost Finished.
There are some moments when you are tired and almost finished with whatever energy that you have got in your body. But the fact that there is still some work to do makes you go crazy. I was in that state when these photos were taken by David Geoffrion, a French TV cameraman inside the compound of Kalikot District Hospital in late February. We were waiting for some people at MSF, an international humanitarian medical agency that operates in Kalikot, that’s located inside the District Hospital compound. (धेरै…)
